The Industrial Railway Society is fortunate in that it has not one but two Aladdin’s Caves. The first is the Archive, with its treasure trove of historical records and photographs. The second is the E-Shop, which naturally sells all current Industrial Railway Society titles and services, but also a wide range of books on railway and related topics, by no means confined to industrial railways. At a time when so few High Street shops still stock railway titles this is all the more useful.
For over fifty-five years we have been producing the Existing Locomotive Series, the definitive guide to all known locomotives and railcars existing in private ownership in the UK and the Irish Republic (whether industrial, heritage railways or just in someone’s back garden). This latest, 19th, edition lists some 7,500 at over a thousand sites. Although the main title is Industrial Locomotives over the past fifty years the balance has shifted in favour of the Preserved section. Although there are still over four hundred sites classed as industrial, there are now nearly 650 preservation sites, and they have the overwhelming share of the locomotives, many ex-mainline. This book, combined with the regular update lists (free to IRS members, and available on subscription to non-members for a one-off fee) is an invaluable aid to keeping track of all these privately-owned locomotives and railcars. Now bigger than ever, with 416 pages of text, arranged by county within country (most sites having a grid reference and post code), plus locomotive and post code indices. There is also a 24 page colour photo section.

Used Books We stock a large collection of second-hand books, mostly in very good condition. The list is constantly changing. As well as our own publications there are hundreds from other publishers (separate from the new stock), displayed on the relevant pages throughout the store, or the selection of recent additions on the parade below – click on any image you are interested.
But if you prefer a list that doesn’t move there a single (but very long!) one here:
