Compiled by Peter Holmes to a similar standard and format as the same author’s Industrial Railways and Locomotives of Cumberland, this hardbound handbook provides a detailed record of the industrial railways and locomotives within the detached part of Lancashire known as Furness or Lancashire North of Morecambe Bay, the historic County of Westmorland, and the Isle of Man. Westmorland and the Isle of Man were last covered in Pocket Book M (1966) and Furness not since Pocket Book 7 (1952) so this book provides much new information. It has numerous photographs, some in colour, and maps to illustrate the industrial railway systems including those of Barrow-in-Furness, the iron mining industry of Askam, Dalton and Lindal, and the more rural lines associated with the Kendal and Shap areas. The Isle of Man section includes the island’s passenger railways, and all areas have coverage of contractors’ railways, preservation sites, and the small industrial systems worked by horse or hand.
