Until the late 1960s most domestic gas in the UK was extracted from coal, often in relatively small town gas works, served by moderately proportioned, even diminutive, locomotives handling the modest volumes of coal and by-products traffic. Oxford was a typical example. Early chapters explain how the gas industry was born and how coal gas is made. The internal industrial railway and locomotives are covered in great detail, plus a final chapter on how such diminutive engines were transported between the works where they were constructed and the customer’s site.
